SINGAPORE, March 15, 2024 — Mantle Network, an Ethereum layer-2 (L2) scaling solution, has successfully completed its Mainnet v2 Tectonic (Mantle v2 Tectonic) upgrade based on OP Stack Bedrock upgrade, extending its lead in gas savings among Ethereum L2s while making crucial advancements in its interoperability with OP Stack EVM chains. 

Mantle v2 Tectonic marks the first major update since the launch of Mantle Network Mainnet Alpha v1 (Mantle v1) on July 17, 2023 during EthCC Paris. “The upgrade derives its name from Ancient Greek τεκτονικός (tektonikós), or ‘pertaining to building’, evoking ground-shifting plate tectonics that occur in the uppermost mantle of the Earth,” said Igneus Terrenus, public liaison of Mantle. 


The upgrade began at 1AM UTC on March 15, and concluded nine hours later at 10AM UTC. The mainnet upgrade was initiated after a successful testnet deployment in January 2024, complete with audits from OpenZeppelin, Secure3, Sigma Prime, and a public bug bounty powered by Secure3 that started on March 4. 


What's New in Mantle v2 Tectonic


EIP-1559 Support

Mantle v2 Tectonic comes with EIP-1559 support. By introducing EIP-1559, Mantle v2 Tectonic gains more efficient transaction fee price auctions while stabilizing block utilization and enhancing network security. For end users, this translates to more stable network fees and less price variance, and leads to more savings in the long run. 


Removal of Redundant Components

Mantle v2 Tectonic has eliminated redundant components such as the Data Transport Layer and Threshold Signature Scheme, which were present in Mantle v1. These removals were made possible by the existence of similar functionalities in the OP Stack architecture. 


Predictable Block Time

In Mantle v2 Tectonic, block generation of L2 is set at fixed intervals (every two seconds), with each rollup block containing multiple transactions. This differs from the design of Mantle v1, of which block generation of L2 is transaction-dependent, and each block contains only one transaction, which causes the block time generated by L2 to become variable. The change improves node performance and renders block time predictable. 


Block State Tagging

Due to the change in the way blocks are generated, Mantle v2 Tectonic adopts the same tagging of blocks and block header states as OP Stack-based chains, including unsafe, safe, and finalized. 


Migration of Native Tokens in L2

In Mantle v2 Tectonic, MNT will be a native Mantle Network L2 asset, instead of being a bridged version of its Ethereum ERC-20 counterpart. 


Meta Transaction

To enhance user experience and reduce user onboarding barriers, Mantle v2 Tectonic introduces Meta Transaction to facilitate the payment of transaction fees on behalf of users. The combination of on-chain contracts and off-chain services, collectively referred to as account abstraction (AA), allows users to specify the sponsor and the percentage of payment to be made, thus lowering the barrier for users. 


Fee Optimization Strategy

Mantle v2 Tectonic implements a fee optimization strategy that allows for more holistic savings across L1 and L2 fees.
